Description
The door sill refers to the horizontal structural beam or rail at the bottom of the rear door opening. It's a critical component of the container's rear end frame, designed to support the weight of cargo during loading/unloading, maintain structural integrity, and provide a stable base for the double cargo doors to seal against. Made from durable corten steel (weather-resistant alloy), it helps prevent water ingress and withstands heavy wear from forklifts, pallet jacks, and repeated door operations.
Key Features and Function
- Location and Design: Positioned at the base of the door end (opposite the front wall), it's typically a box-type or flat steel plate profile, about 4-6 inches high, running the full width of the container (e.g., 8 feet for a 20ft container). It connects to the rear corner posts and includes cam keepers for door latching.
- Role in Container Anatomy:
- Supports the container's plywood or steel floor.
- Acts as a threshold to keep out moisture and debris.
- Reinforces the overall frame against twisting or compression during stacking or transport.
- Common Issues: Over time, door sills can dent, corrode, or warp from impacts or exposure, leading to poor door seals or leaks. Inspections often check for cracks or misalignment.
If you're dealing with damage, the door sill is a replaceable part in container maintenance.
